Looking at Birch, you notice the halo of fibres that gives the yarn its lightness. That fluff, and a thicket of fine birch twigs, named themselves.
How it feels
From the first touch the yarn is soft, and it stays that pleasant on the needles. Beside the softness there is a light sheen. Baby alpaca under 22 microns brings the softness and the halo; naturally strong silk gives a firm core and that gloss.
Birch is 75% baby alpaca from Peru and 25% mulberry silk from China. About 207 metres in a 25 g skein puts it in lace weight. With that thickness and a shorter halo than mohair, it is an ideal mohair substitute even for very sensitive skin.
Swatches on different needle sizes
The main reason we brought this yarn in is how many ways it works:
- a single strand gives a light fabric
- hold it with any yarn to add a halo
- held double or more it still knits a delicate fabric

single strand
3.0 mm needles — 26 sts × 40 rows = 10 × 10 cm
4.0 mm needles — 20 sts × 33 rows = 10 × 10 cm
held double
4.0 mm needles — 19 sts × 32 rows = 10 × 10 cm
5.0 mm needles — 17 sts × 26 rows = 10 × 10 cm
6.0 mm needles — 15 sts × 24 rows = 10 × 10 cm
Colours that inspired us
Designing our own yarn meant facing a huge challenge: choosing the colours. We wanted a palette that felt as universal as possible, yet still inspiring. That is how the first ten Birch colours came to be.
